P&P insurance will no longer be included in the purchase process as either an option or requirement for buyers. This change will remove the perception that buyers need to buy insurance as a protection on eBay. In fact, business sellers are responsible for their items until they arrive safely in the buyer's hands.
Sellers can always choose to purchase insurance for their deliveries, but they shouldn’t ask buyers to insure purchases separately. In some categories like Antiques, Collectibles, and Jewellery, delivery insurance for sellers is the norm. Where appropriate, sellers can include the cost of insurance in their item or postage price.
When does this change take effect?
eBay is scheduled to remove P&P insurance from new listings on the site on 22nd September 2009.
Do I have to update my listings?
No, you don’t have to update your existing listings. However, you’ll no longer have the ability to include P&P insurance in new, revised or renewed listings. If sellers offer insurance elsewhere in their listing (e.g., in item description) they will have to remove it. This should be completed by 19th October 2009.
If I want to revise my listings, is bulk editing functionality available?
Yes, bulk editing functionality will be available from 22nd September 2009.
Will my listings be blocked in Relist, Sell Similar or Sell One Like This flows if they include P&P insurance?
No, eBay won’t block renewals, but we will remove insurance options from the listing itself. You’ll see an informational message in the re-listing flows telling you that eBay has removed these options from your listing.
Paying for P&P insurance raises my costs. What can I do?
If appropriate, you can move the cost of P&P insurance into your handling charges or item price.
How do I add my insurance cost to my Auction-style listings?
If you list with Auction-style format, you can choose to add your insurance cost into your handling charges. You’ll need to estimate the value of the item, and check the approximate cost of coverage with your carrier or third-party insurance provider. You could also start your item at a slightly higher price to cover the cost of insurance.
